PA State INSPECTION & Emissions Test

PA STATE (SAFETY) INSPECTION

Pennsylvania requires annual vehicle safety inspections to ensure that vehicles are safe to operate. The inspections can prevent vehicle failure on the highways and crashes that may result in injuries or death. The inspections also include an emission test, which tests the vehicle's engine and emissions efficiency. If the vehicle passes both the safety inspection and the emission test, two stickers are placed on the bottom left corner of the windshield. If your vehicle passes or fails inspecti

When can I get my inspection done?

In Pennsylvania, you can get your car inspected up to 90 days before the final deadline. This means that if your vehicle is due for inspection in July, you can get it done as early as May

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Yes, before we can begin the State Inspection & Emission test we need 2 things:

  1. A valid copy of your proof of insurance
  2. A current copy of your PA registration

If you have these documents in a digital format, you can email them to brownsauto3322@gmail.com before your appointment.

What is checked in the State Inspection?

  • Lights
  • Brakes
  • Horn
  • Tires
  • Safety belts
  • Exhaust system
  • Mirrors
  • Tag mounting
  • Suspension
  • Turn signals
  • Steering
  • Glazing
  • Wipers
  • Ignition
  • Air induction
  • Fuel metering
  • Early fuel evaporative
  • Air injection
  • Positive crankcase ventilation
  • Evaporative emission control
  • Exhaust gas recirculation and conversion
  • Other major parts of your vehicle.

What if my vehicle fails the State Inspection?

Pass or fail, you will be charged for a State Inspection. If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will be told what repairs are needed in order for it to pass. You will then need to have these repairs completed and have the vehicle re-tested. You are entitled to one free re-test at our station, as long as you bring it back within 30 days. If you bring the vehicle back after 30 days, you will be charged for a new State Inspection.

PA EMISSIONS INSPECTION

A great deal has been done to improve air quality in Pennsylvania; however more vehicles on the road and more miles being traveled are offsetting this progress. Vehicle emissions inspections are part of Pennsylvania’s plan to clean the air and keep it clean in the future.

Are there exemptions?

  • Motorcycles.
  • Vehicles that were driven less than 5000 miles and owned by the current owner for more than a year.
  • New vehicles that were driven less than 5000 miles.
  • Vehicles with antique, collectible or classic vehicle registrations.
  • Vehicles registered as street rods.

What does the "check engine" light have to do with my emissions inspection?

You will have a higher chance of passing the inspection if you solve your “Check Engine” light issues. That light could be on for something minor, like a loose gas cap or a clogged filter, or it could also be something more serious.
